How to Clean Your Menstrual Cup & Disc

Keeping your menstrual cup or menstrual disc clean is essential for comfort, hygiene, and long-term use. With the right care routine, your bohokiwi cup or disc can stay fresh, safe, and ready for every cycle.

Before First Use

Before using your menstrual cup or disc for the first time, sterilise it using the bohokiwi foldable steriliser, the bohokiwi 3-hole Steriliser Pod, or by boiling it in a pot of water for 5–10 minutes.

Tip: If boiling in a pot, place your cup or disc inside a whisk before adding it to the water. This helps prevent direct contact with the bottom of the pot, where the silicone may overheat.

Daily Care During Your Cycle

At Home

Wash your hands before handling your menstrual cup or disc.

Remove, empty, and rinse with cold water first to help reduce staining.

Wash with a mild, fragrance-free, oil-free soap if needed.

Rinse thoroughly before reinserting.

Avoid harsh soaps, scented products, antibacterial washes, oils, bleach, or heavily fragranced cleansers, as these may irritate sensitive skin or affect the silicone.

On the Go

Wash your hands before handling your cup or disc.

Empty and rinse with cold water if available.

If there is no water available, wipe with toilet paper or a clean wet tissue, then rinse properly at the next opportunity.

Reinsert your cup or disc.

If you are out for the day, carrying your bohokiwi case or steriliser can make cleaning and storing your product easier.

Quick Rinse Using a bohokiwi Steriliser

The bohokiwi foldable steriliser and 3-hole Steriliser Pod can both be used for a quick rinse during your cycle.

Add clean water to your steriliser, place your menstrual cup or disc inside, close the lid, and gently shake.

If using the 3-hole Steriliser Pod, cover the holes with your finger while shaking, then pour the water out through the lid holes.

If using the foldable steriliser, hold the lid closed while shaking, then pour the water into the toilet or sink.

This is a quick rinse only. It does not replace proper washing or end-of-cycle sterilising.

Sterilising After Your Cycle

After each cycle, we recommend sterilising your menstrual cup or disc before storing it away. This helps keep it hygienic and ready for your next period.

You can sterilise your cup or disc using the bohokiwi foldable steriliser, the bohokiwi 3-hole Steriliser Pod, or by boiling it in a pot of water for 5–10 minutes.

Allow your cup or disc to air dry completely before storing.

For full instructions, see our How to Use Your Menstrual Cup & Disc Steriliser guide.

Deep Cleaning & Stain Removal

Over time, menstrual cups and discs may develop light staining. This is normal and does not necessarily mean your product is dirty. However, if you want to freshen it up, you can try the methods below.

Mild Soap Wash

Wash your cup or disc with a mild, fragrance-free, oil-free soap. Rinse thoroughly to make sure no soap residue remains.

Clean the Air Holes — Cups Only

If you are using a menstrual cup, use the bohokiwi cleaning brush to gently clean the small air holes around the rim. Keeping these holes clear helps the cup seal properly.

Sunlight Exposure

Place your clean menstrual cup or disc in direct sunlight for a short time. Sunlight may help naturally reduce staining.

Hydrogen Peroxide Soak

For occasional stain removal only, you may soak in 3% hydrogen peroxide for up to 2 hours.

Rinse thoroughly and sterilise before use.

Do not use regularly, as repeated use may affect silicone over time.

How to Store Your Menstrual Cup or Disc

Store only once completely dry.

Use the bohokiwi breathable cotton bag, a bohokiwi carrier case for discs only, or store in the bohokiwi steriliser case.

If storing in a closed case, make sure the cup or disc is fully dry first.

Avoid storing your cup or disc while damp, as airflow helps keep it fresh between cycles.

Final Tip

Regular rinsing, washing, and sterilising will help keep your menstrual cup or menstrual disc clean, fresh, and comfortable to use.

bohokiwi sterilisers make period care simple, whether you are at home or on the go.

Keeping your menstrual cup or menstrual disc clean is essential for comfort, hygiene, and long-term use. With the right care routine, your bohokiwi cup or disc can stay fresh, safe, and ready for every cycle.
